Original Two Room Practice
Adam Road Hospital has its origin in
Dr Wong Yip Chong's two-room private psychiatric
practice at Ngee Ann Building and, in 1971, expanded to a bigger
clinic located at Specialist Medical Centre, Somerset Road.
April 1973 :
The growing need for inpatient care for psychiatric patients resulted
in the acquisition of a leased bungalow along Dunearn Road, which
was named Singapore Nursing Home.
: The Transition
to Adam Road Hospital
In furtherance of the psychiatric patients' needs, a speciality hospital was built. In June 1980, Adam Road Hospital
(ARH) became operative incorporating both the Inpatient and Outpatient
departments under one roof.
ARH is a fully air-conditioned 49 bed private
hospital which had unique facilities such as audio-visual monitoring
of all patients and electronic communication between patient and
nurses' station. Accommodation ranged from affordable open wards
of 13 beds through to comfortable 4 bedders to elegant single rooms,
enhanced by a beautiful and relaxing garden.
Special features have been incorporated to improve the safety and
comfort of patient care, enabling ARH to provide efficient and advanced
care for all patients.
Unique to the Hospital was the Admissions Assistance Unit facility
which assisted with problematic admissions.
The Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology Unit provided expert medico-legal
opinions and court attendance services.
Total Wellness Centre
The Hospital expanded its services to include a Total Wellness Centre
to generate public awareness of Mental Illness, Prevention of Mental
Ill-health and Promotion of Positive Mental Health for all members
The Centre organised talks, lectures, seminars and workshops. It
provided services for counselling and training of counsellors and
consultancy on Employee Assistance Programmes.
& Adolescent Psychiatry Unit
1995 saw the addition of the specialist
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, which served the special needs
of the young and their families.
The completion of an extensive upgrading and renovation programme
had improved the facilities, ambience and comfort for patients and
visitors alike well into the 21st century.
